What got you huk'd?
My mother used to take me out on an old ski boat and idle down the dam of a lake in Kansas while I caught little bluegill on a popper. I was hooked from there and have pretty much done everything in my power since to keep chasing fish. That’s what I love most about fishing. You’ll never master it. Every lake is different, the fish are always changing, and there’s always something new to chase.
Did you always know fishing would be your career?
I didn’t always know fishing would be my career, but by my junior year of high school I knew it was what I wanted to pursue. From that point on, I wanted to do everything in my power to make a career out of it and see how far I could take it.
What's your favorite catch?
My favorite catch actually wasn’t even my own. I was boat captaining for two high school anglers on Kentucky Lake, and we were fishing a submerged bridge with deep crankbaits. It was 95+ degrees, late in the day, and the boys were worn out. One of them was just winding his crankbait back when I looked up and saw a 6+ pound bass jump. I told him he had a fish on and he told me he didn’t, then just kept winding. It got right next to the boat and jumped again before he finally realized what was happening. Seeing the excitement on their faces when we got that fish in the boat is something I’ll never forget. That’s still one of my favorite moments I’ve had on the water.
What's next on your bucket list?
Making the Bassmaster Elite Series is at the top of the list. I’ve spent a long time working toward the opportunity to fish at the highest level, and getting there would be a huge milestone. Beyond that, I just want to keep traveling and fishing new places.
What's the one thing every angler should invest in?
A good rain suit. It’s not just for the rain. Whether it’s cold, windy, or pouring, having the right gear keeps you comfortable and on the water longer. The longer you can stay out there and stay focused, the more fish you’re going to catch.
What's in your kit other than Huk?
One thing you’ll always find in my boat is a few Smucker’s Uncrustables. I’m not saying they help me catch fish, but I’m also not willing to find out what happens without them.
