One-hundred boats, one meaningful mission and more than $315,000 raised for the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital.
Each year, the Hooked on Miracles King Mackerel Tournament brings the Lowcountry fishing community together in Huk’s hometown of Charleston, South Carolina. While there is plenty of competition on the water, the tournament’s greatest impact reaches far beyond the weigh-in stage.
A Special Day on the Water
Before tournament lines went in, patients from MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital had the chance to experience a fishing day of their own.
On Friday, July 24, local captains and crews welcomed the kids aboard for a day on the water. The trip gave patients and their families an opportunity to step away from the hospital, pick up a rod and simply enjoy time outside together. The smiles, high-fives and proud catches made it clear that some of the weekend’s best moments happened before the official tournament even began.
Artwork With a Story
Each year, a patient at MUSC creates the artwork featured on the official tournament shirt. This year’s design came from Vinny and was worn throughout the weekend by anglers, volunteers and supporters.
Huk donated the full run of shirts, allowing 100% of the proceeds from every shirt purchased to go directly to the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital. The shirts nearly sold out, turning Vinny’s artwork into both a meaningful part of the tournament and another powerful way for the community to support its patients.
100 Boats Compete in Charleston
On Saturday, nearly 100 boats headed out from Ripley Light Marina in search of the heaviest king mackerel.
Team Mo’ Better finished at the top of the leaderboard with a 39.6-pound king. Lil Billistic claimed second place with a 33.5-pound fish, followed by Pole Dancer in third with a 32-pound king.
The competitive field brought together anglers from across the region, but the shared purpose behind the tournament remained at the center of the weekend. Every boat, fish and trip to the scales helped draw more attention and support to the children and families receiving care at MUSC.
The Weekend’s Biggest Win
Hooked on Miracles supports the hospital’s goal of providing a hospital dog for every floor, giving patients comfort and companionship as they recover and heal. The organization also helps fund the STAR program, which allows patients to continue their education from the hospital during treatment and care.
Raising more than $315,000 in a single weekend is an incredible reflection of what can happen when Charleston’s anglers, businesses, volunteers and families come together for a shared cause.
